From June onwards, residents may look forward to enjoying the comfort of a cab at just Rs 8 per kilometre. For,non-AC taxis are all set to hit the city roads with four companies ready to provide the services.
The proposal was relegated to the backburner for almost one year as it failed to generate interest from cab operators in the city. But four firms the Atlantic Tourism Corporation,Speed Motors,Harbir Automobiles and Harbir Travels applied for tenders invited by the UT Administration last month.
The minimum fleet size allowed is ten. Later, the companies can add more cabs to their fleet. The Administration has approved all the four applications and the matter has been forwarded to the Election Commission, said State Transport Authority (STA) Secretary Vandana Disodia.
In the initial phase, the cabs will operate in Chandigarh only. Once the agreement between Chandigarh and Mohali is countersigned by the Punjab government, the service would be extended to Mohali and other areas.
The decision of running these cabs in Panchkula will depend on an agreement for a uniform corridor system with the Haryana government.
