‘Admissions to schools tougher than to colleges’

If the struggles of anxious parents are an indication,it seems easier to get admission in colleges as opposed to schools.

If the struggles of anxious parents are an indication,it seems easier to get admission in colleges as opposed to schools. This was exemplified on Monday as scores of parents, seeking to admit their wards in government schools, were seen moving from the office of the deputy DEO to the DEO’s office and that of the private schools auditor; with many of them complaining of harassment.

Among the parents was Devinder, who is looking to admit his son in a government school in Sector 10 where his other son studies. “I had applied for pre-nursery admission in February but school authorities asked me to complete all the documents, which I did and now they are saying they do not have any seat. Authorities are asking me to get my son admitted in another school located in Sector 8,but I cannot pay Rs 1,000 for his transportation,” he lamented.

Similar was the case of Aparna Datta, who has just shifted to Manimajra from Mauli Jagran. “I am looking to get my son admitted at the Manimajra Government School but authorities are asking me to get my ration card transferred. It is not possible as my husband is under treatment at PGIMER. I have attached my landlord’s ration card and my electricity bills to prove that I am staying in a rented accommodation at Manimajra, but to no effect,” she said.

Another parent working with a charitable organisation said that he used to live in Sector 56,but has now has shifted to Sector 40. “I have been coming to this office for many days, but to no avail. Due to my economic considerations I cannot send my child to Sector 56 school,” he said.

District Education Officer (DEO) Ram Kumar Sharma, however, said that the admission process has been smooth. “ Admissions are going on smoothly in government schools. There are certain problems ,but we are solving them. Without residence proofs admissions in schools are not possible, still we are helping all the parents,” he said.
