The Chandigarh Administration has disbursed over Rs 1.13 crore to 63 victims of the 1984 riots.

The Chandigarh Administration has disbursed over Rs 1.13 crore to 63 victims of the 1984 riots. A total of 143 applicants had applied for relief on account of being 1984 riots victims.

However,67 of them failed toproduce proof of being riot victims of and were,hence,not awarded any relief.

An affidavit to this effect was filed today by Brijendra Singh,Deputy Commissioner,Chandigarh,during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by NGO Lawyers for Human Rights International (LFHRI).

The UT Administration had formed a committee to scrutinise the claims and make recommendations for grant of ex-gratia and other assistance to the 1984 riot victims. The panel comprised of the Deputy Commissioner,Additional Deputy Commissioner and concerned SDM,Chandigarh.

“An amount of over Rs 1 crore has been disbursed to 63 claimants. These include victims whose property was damaged,who had received injuries,and grants given on account of rehabilitation.

Of the 143 applicants,“67 have not submitted any proof of being a 1984 riot victim”,reads the affidavit.
