Jagdevs lawyer: Police harassing my client
Jagdev Singh,a Canada-based NRI who is facing a charge of murdering former MLA Nachattar Singh Gill,father of DGP Paramjit Singh Gill,was arrested by the Moga police on Monday in a separate case of theft.
Jagdev has been booked along with his two cousins Gursewak Singh,Sarabhjit Singh and friend Shamsher Singh,all residents of Moga. The FIR has been registered at the city police station. While Gursewak has also been arrested,the other two are absconding. The two arrested will be produced before a local court on Tuesday.
The theft complaint was lodged by one Vijay Kumar,who deals in scrap. He complained that Jagdev along with others broke into his shop on Sunday evening and took away material worth Rs 19,500.
Jagdevs counsel Ramesh Grover,meanwhile,has moved an application by Pritam Singh a relative of Jagdev before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Karunesh Kumar Kakkar alleging that the police were unnecessarily harassing him and implicating him in false cases. The CJM has asked the police to file a reply by Tuesday
The DGPs father was murdered in 1991 and an FIR was registered against Jagdevs family members including mother Pritam Kaur,brother Hardev Singh,sister Paramjit Kaur and three others.
Jagdev fled the country and went to USA and finally settled in Canada where he was granted citizenship. In the meantime,the police during the course of investigation also included his name in the case. The Supreme Court has already acquitted all his family members from charges of murder.
In 2008,Singh came back and surrendered before a court. The court granted him bail on April 6,2009 .
