Abir Malhotra (26),who alleged on Saturday that he was robbed of Rs 8 lakh at gunpoint by two men, admitted at a press conference held by the SSP Naunihal Singh today that he had cooked up the story as he had spent all the money for personal purposes. The police are yet to arrest the accused for giving them false information as they have to take legal opinion on the matter. On Monday Abir,a web designer, was reported to be missing by his family who alleged “harassment” at the hands of the police.

Singh said,“Abir had been operating a joint locker of his sister Deepti Mehta at Corporation Bank,Phase 10,Mohali. His sister is married in Karnataka. In May,she had deposited Rs 8 lakh in the locker which contained her jewellery too.”

“In the last four months,Abir had taken Rs 5 lakh out of the locker and invested it in an online survey company SpeakAsia. The company had just paid under 50 per cent returns when it shut shop and he took out the remaining Rs 3 lakh from the locker. Along with the returns from the company,he purchased a new Ford Figo. Abir had told his family that he had earned the money by providing business to a Sector 15 shop and had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from one of his friends,” added Singh.

His trouble started when a few days before the incident, his sister called him up and told him that she required the money as her husband would make an investment somewhere. This was when the story of fake robbery was planned by him.

According to the SSP,on the day of the incident Abir went to the bank and opened the locker which had no cash left inside it. He stayed there for 10 minutes and then came out with a bag. He stopped his car on the road separating Sectors 48 and 49 for over 20 minutes before making a phone call on the alleged robbery. His call was initially received by the Mohali PCR which gave him the number of the UT PCR. The police rushed to the spot after getting news of the alleged ‘robbery’.

Under the fear of the truth coming out,Abir went to Delhi on Monday from where he was traced by the police who brought him back. He confessed to his crime on questioning.
