Playing her only second AITA level tournament,Chandigarh Club Tennis Academy (CCTA) trainee Aashima Garg caused a major upset when she ousted fourth seed Charvi Saxena in a well fought three-set in the quarter-finals of girls’ singles Under-16 category to enter the semi-finals of the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament held at CLTA Stadium,Sector 10 on Tuesday.
Aashima looked in prime form during her 4-2 win in the first set. Charvi bounced back into the game in the second set but she had to work hard to see off a defiant resistance from Aashima to win the set in a tie-breaker by 4(3)-3. Slowly gaining in confidence,Aashima had Charvi on the back foot after she played some good shots to clinch the third and final set by 4-2 to win the thrilling match.
Meanwhile,Chandigarh’s Harman Chhina registered an emphatic 4-3(3),4-1 victory over Bhavya Wadhawan to secure her berth in the last four. Harman was stretched to the maximum by her opponent in the first set. However,she hardly faced any resistance from Bhavya and went on to win the second set by 4-1.
In boy’s singles Under-16 category,Chandigarh lad Taranbir Singh ousted Aviraj Kanboj in a thrilling match by 6-1,7-6(8). He did not face any difficulty in securing the first set. Aviraj,who was looking off colour in the first set,regrouped his game and had Taranbir on his feet all the time. With both the players not willing to give up the match moved into a tie-breaker. Taranbir held on to his nerves and was richly rewarded with a 7-6(8) win which saw him move into the semis.
In the second quarter-final match,Ajay Singh Thakur of Delhi showed the door to Bhavtran Singh after he won the match by 6-3,6-4. This way Ajay also booked his place in the last four.
Meanwhile,Hassan Abdaal Dhanoa of Punjab cruised into the last four of the girls’ Under-14 category following her 4-0,3-4(4),4-0 win over Nikita in the quarter-finals. In another match in the same category,Nikita Bishnoi of Chandigarh rallied to beat Harman K Chhina by 1-4,4-3(3),4-2 in a tough encounter.
In the boys’ Under-14 category,Chandigarh’s Pranav Suri registered a fine 6-3,6-2 win over Sohil S Bedi of Delhi to put his name among the semi-finalists. Sean Yip of Chandigarh also reached the semis after he defeated Adity Deswal of Uttar Pradesh by 6-3,6-1.
