A day after the AAP’s Ludhiana worker Anokh Mittal claimed his wife died in a brutal attack by “robbers”, the police said Monday they cracked the case with the arrest of Mittal and his paramour who hired “contract killers” for the murder.

The Ludhiana police said they have also arrested four contract killers while one is absconding.

Kuldeep Singh Chahal, Commissioner, Ludhiana police, said they found during their investigation that Anokh Mittal, 35, a businessman, hired contract killers to murder his wife Lipsi also known as Manvi in connivance with his paramour Pratiksha.

Chahal said a group of five assailants hired by Mittal intercepted their car on Dehlon Road and attacked Manvi with swords and other sharp-edged weapons when they were returning home after having dinner at a restaurant. They fled leaving her grievously injured, and also took away Mittal’s Ritz car and jewellery that the couple was wearing to make the attack look like a robbery.

Chahal said they also found Mittal had hired the contract killers for Rs 2.50 lakh of which Rs 50,000 were paid in advance and the rest of the amount was to be paid after the murder.

The police said they have arrested Anokh Mittal, Pratiksha, and four contract killers identified as Sahnewal’s residents Amritpal Singh alias Balli, 26, Gurdeep Singh, 25, Sonu, 24, and Sagardeep alias Teji, 30, from Dhandhari Kalan. Another hitman, identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, is yet to be arrested.

They also said they have recovered a Ritz, Swift, and I-20 used in the crime, and a sword from the accused. A First Information Report (FIR) for murder under relevant sections has been registered against all accused at the Dehlon Police Station.

The police said Mittal was having an extra-marital affair with Pratiksha of Jamalpur, and Manvi had got to know about it. They said Mittal and Manvi’s relationship was strained for many months and they had frequent fights.

In his statement to the police Sunday, Mittal said he was returning home after having dinner at a restaurant with his wife at around midnight on February 15. He said he stopped his car to relieve himself near Rurka Road in the Dehlon area. He said five to six “robbers” following them in a vehicle attacked him with an iron rod and made him inhale some substance to render him unconscious.

Mittal, who joined the AAP around three months ago, claimed when he regained consciousness after 20 minutes, he saw his wife lying on the road with grievous injuries and she died when taken to the hospital. He said the “robbers” also took away his car and Manvi’s jewellery.
