An Express initiative to build a school at Solan opens new vistas for rural students
It was a special day for students from Khera village of Solan district as they entered the all-new block of their school on Sunday afternoon. Built in memory of Kargil martyr Subedar Tara Chand,the new building has been constructed with funds collected through a citizens initiative led by The Indian Express. While Subedar Tara Chands widow,Roshini Devi,inaugurated the building last year,a formal dedication ceremony rolled out on March 21 with Shekhar Gupta,Editor-in-Chief,The Indian Express Group,handing over the documents of the school to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal.
Dedicating the new building to the residents of the area,the Chief Minister highly appreciated the Groups gesture and remarked how the youth of Himachal Pradesh have been at the forefront when it comes to valour. Among those present for the ceremony included State Health Minister Dr Rajeev Bindal,Nalagarh MLA Hari Narain Singh,Vinod Chandel,MLA from Deharadun and Avtar Singh,Pradhan,village Khera and a large number of local leaders and school students.
The idea for constructing the new school building was conceived following a suggestion by former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. He suggested that besides constructing the Chandigarh War Memorial,the Express Group should also work towards uplifting education in rural areas. The Group selected the site at Khera following a request from the local gram panchayat for construction of two rooms. It was decided that a new building would be constructed,with a request to the state government to upgrade the school to senior secondary level. The new double-storey block,spread over 12,000 sq feet,comprises 14 classrooms and a multi-purpose hall.
