As many as 62 children up to the age of 18 years went missing or were reported kidnapped in Chandigarh last year, which implies that one child was reported missing every sixth day. The total number of people missing or kidnapped was 128 in the last year.
Data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recently shows that from January 1 to December 31, 2014, the number of missing and kidnapped children was 31 each. Of these, 46 were girls. A maximum of 25 children were reported missing in the age group of 15 to 18 years, while 21 were reported kidnapped.
Since data from the Chandigarh Police shows that 11 children were reported missing in 2013, it implies an increase of almost three times in 2014. The number of adults missing in 2013, according to the Chandigarh Police, was 58. In 2014, the figure stood at 57.
