The body of 45-year-old sub-inspector of Chandigarh Police,who reportedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance was found in his police quarters in Sector 42 on Friday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Vishal Sharma,who is believed to have committed suicide on Wednesday night as the body was partially decomposed.
Depression due to a matrimonial dispute is seen as a reason behind the extreme step. His mother-in-law,Inspector Geeta Devi said that Sharma was attending a drug de-addiction centre at PGI. The police said that their was a possibility that he was in an inebriated state when he took the drastic step. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.
According to police,Sharma,who had been posted at Sector 17 police station was a member of Chandigarh Police cricket team. The 1993 batch police personnel had represented J&K in the Ranji Trophy. Based on his performance in the cricket field,he was given the ORP rank of an Inspector on Monday.
Sukhbir Rana,SHO of Sector 36 police station said,On Friday afternoon,members of the cricket team came to check on Sharma as he had not been reporting for practice for the past few days. When no one responded to their repeated knocking and due to the foul smell coming out of the room,they informed the neighbours who called the police.
The SHO added that Sharmas body was lying on his chair while Gayatri Mantr was playing on the television.
He is been survived by his wife Neetu and two children. His wife has been staying with her mother at Sector 26 police lines since January 25. Sharma is also reported to have gone and visited his family there around 20 days back. The body has been sent for postmortem examination.
