3 teachers get national award

For the three national award winners from the city, teaching is what defines their life and being. After devoting around three decades to students and education, these winners say that they always knew being a teacher was their true calling. They were conferred with the prestigious national award by the President at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan today

Dharamvir Singh from Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 26 (Timber Market),Sartul Singh,Government Primary School,Manimajra-2 and Lalita Nandel,DAV Model School,Sector 15,were selected for the national award for their contribution in the field of education. While Dharamvir spots talent for sports among his students,Lalita teaches her students love for the English language. Sartul, meanwhile,is a junior basic training teacher.

Though their fields are varied but one thing that unites them is their devotion to impart knowledge to children, year after year. From calling it the most satisfying profession to seeing their own future in their students, these winners owe their success to their students. “If students are because of us then we too owe our achievements to them. I always wanted to be a teacher as I felt that it is the only profession through which I could contribute to the society. While the basic premise of a teacher-student relationship remains the same,it has evolved over the years with students finding a friend in us rather than a hard taskmaster,” said Dharamvir.

Dharamvir has produced many sportspersons among his students with many having played at national and international levels. Glad at his achievement, there is only one sore point. “We should let children be rather than forcing them to follow into someone else’s footsteps. I have seen cases when a blooming talent was nipped in the bud as the student entered class X. Players too bring laurels to the nations and we must encourage sports,” he stated.

Addressed with terms sobriquet such as makers of the nation, these winners know that the responsibility does not come easy.

“Teaching is not as easy as it looks as we are not to just read out our lessons to students. We have to spot a student’s strength and weakness and help him improve upon the same. Parents too instill a lot of faith in us which acts as a morale booster,” felt Sartul. He said that with the changing times, methodology to teach also needs to undergo a significant change.
