3 lawyers ‘beat up’ another, probe ordered

Taking serious note of allegations of thrashing and criminal intimidation levelled by a lawyer against three counterparts of the Abohar district courts, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has ordered a probe.

Taking serious note of allegations of thrashing and criminal intimidation levelled by a lawyer against three counterparts of the Abohar district courts, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana has ordered a probe.

The complainant,Gokal Chand Limba of the Abohar district Bar in Ferozepur has alleged that, despite lodging a complaint with the local police,no action has been taken against three lawyers and their clerk who allegedly thrashed him. According to the complainant,on June 17,he had gone to argue a case before the divisional canal officer in Abohar, when the opposing lawyer in the trial, accompanied by his son (also a lawyer),entered into an argument with him. “ Since the case involved a lawyer, the opposing lawyer told me not to contest the case” reads the complaint addressed to the Bar Council. Limba has further alleged that when he turned down their request,he was beaten, following which he was hospitalised.

Chairman of the Bar Council,Advocate Lekh Raj Sharma, has ordered a probe into the matter. “This being a very serious matter, let an independent inquiry also be conducted. Vijay Kumar Jagga, who is also a co-opted member of the Bar Council,is requested to hold an inquiry and submit a report within one week” reads the order.

Complainant to get back bribe money

Eight years after a Judicial Magistrate S S Bhardwaj was arrested by the CBI in connection with a 2003 corruption case and later held guilty, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered that bribe money be released to the family of the complainant. The high court,in a order last week, had stated that the bribe money shall be released to G S Samra, who had lodged a complaint with the CBI that Bhardwaj had demanded a bribe Rs 7 lakh from him to settle a case. Following this, the CBI had laid a trap and caught Bhardwaj red-handed while accepting the bribe. Citing personal reasons,Samra had filed an application in the court demanding that the money, which at present is in CBI custody,be returned to him.
