Seventeen-year-old Anurag Sangwan has topped the UPSC examination for National Defence Academy and Naval Academy held in September 2022. The young Class 12 student from Gurgaon says his desire to join the NDA was a “gradual process over time”.

The only child of his parents, Anurag wants to opt for the Army after having completed his military training at NDA Khadakvasla. Anurag has topped the merit list with an overall score of 1,058 marks out of 1800, scoring 609 in the written examination and 449 in the Services Selection Board interview respectively out of 900 in each stage.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Anurag said that he is a student of Blue Bells Model School in Sector 4, Gurgaon, and that he studied in Swiss Cottage School till class 7. He is awaiting his Class 12 board exams result.

“I cannot say when I got inspired to join the Army. It is an ongoing process. You cannot mark it down to one point of time,” said Anurag when asked as to how and when he got the inspiration to join NDA.

The young boy’s father Jivak Sanghvan is a finance manager in a private company while his mother Sudesh Devi is a teacher at a private school. The family belongs to Chandeni village near Charkhi Dadri in Haryana. “I stayed in the village for around eight months before my father moved to Bhiwani and then to Gurgaon in 2005,” said Anurag.

While Haryana has a long and distinguished history of contributing soldiers and Central armed police forces officers and other ranked personnel, Anurag has no close relative who is in the defence services. “I do not have any near relative who is in the defence services. Of course, in the extended family there are many but no immediate family member,” he said.

Anurag said he opted for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combination in Class 12. He took coaching for the written exam from a private academy and prepared for the SSB interview in another academy at Nagpur.

“I have decided to opt for Army in NDA. I am not sure which arm or service I will eventually opt for to be commissioned into as an officer. I am aware of all the fighting and support arms and services. It all depends on what I am suitable for and what I feel from within,” he said.
