11 held for impersonation

The Central Bureau of Investigation and the Chandigarh Police,in a joint operation, arrested and booked 11 people for impersonation.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Chandigarh Police,in a joint operation, arrested and booked 11 people for impersonation. These 11 had proxied for candidates appearing in an examination of conductors for the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) on Sunday. While the CBI arrested eight of them, the Chandigarh Police arrested three.

The CBI had received secret information about an attempt by about 25 to 30 people to impersonate aspirants for conductor posts in CTU. The exam was conducted at 68 centres where nearly 20,000 candidates appeared. The input was shared with senior officials of the UT Administration with a request for strict verification of the candidates. CBI teams were also deputed at various centres; officials of CTU were also associated in the checking.

The CBI teams found four impersonators, while three others identified by the centre staff were also transferred to the investigating agency’s custody. One candidate,at whose behest someone had proxied, was caught.

“An invigilator got suspicious when a candidate attempted 75 questions in only 20 minutes. When confronted, the candidate said he was from Haryana. However, when he was asked about the name of his village and caste,he got confused as he was actually from Bihar. After verification of the application form,it was discovered that he was impersonating a candidate from Haryana who is his relative,” said a source.

As many as 68 CCTV cameras,24 duty magistrates and 800 police personnel were involved in the exercise. It has been decided that signatures of those selected in the final list will be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) and their signatures on application forms will be cross checked as against those on the examination sheets. Also, the CCTV footage of those who appeared in the examination will be looked into at the time of preparation of final list of selected candidates.

One of the impersonators is a BA first-year student of DAV College,Chandigarh; two of the impersonators came from Bihar. Rest of the proxy writers came from various parts of Haryana.

At the request of CBI,the admit cards of all the candidates were retained for further probe. The number of impersonators is likely to increase after investigations conclude. Some of the arrested have been identified as Rinkoo, resident of Bihar, who was caught impersonating for Sonu,a resident of Jind; Pawan Kumar, who proxied for Sukhwinder Singh of Haryana; Deepak Dahiya, who took the examination in place of Ravinder Singh Dahiya (he was arrested, too); Vikas Kumar,Meutan Kumar Bharti,Sanjay and Amit Kumar.
