On April 10, as clashes broke out in Khargone city. (PTI)Five people have been arrested in Madhya Pradesh connection with the murder of 28-year old Ibraish Khan, the first reported death resulting from the clashes that broke out on April 10 during a Ram Navmi procession in Khargone.
Deepak Pradhan, Ajay Karma, Ajay Solanki, Sandeep Verma and Deepika Gangle—all residents of Rahimpur and Anand Nagar in the district—were arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder. Rohit Kashwani, who is holding additional charge of the superintendent of police, told The Indian Express, “We have also recovered the object used to attack Ibraish. Further investigations are on.”
According to the Khargone police, on the evening of April 10, Vicky Gangle’s house in Anand Nagar was attacked by a mob that pelted stones and petrol bombs. In retaliation, the group of five set out to chase the mob and caught hold of Ibraish Khan in Kapas Mandi, a gated compound about 300 meters from Anand Nagar on the other side of the road, and allegedly attacked him.
Ibraish was found grievously injured at 1:30am on April 11 and rushed to the district hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The police said they had subsequently sent his body 126 km away to Indore’s MY Hospital because the hospital in Khargone lacked facilities.

Meanwhile, Ibraish parents and brothers kept looking for him. Ibraish’s mother Mumtaz would set out and look for her son in morgues, nallas, rivers and brick kilns. On April 14, with the curfew relaxed, his family members managed to reach the Kotwali police station and registered a missing complaint with regard to the 28-year-old. The police registered a case after his name did not feature in the list of arrested persons.
Twelve hours later, around 11:30pm, the police registered a case of murder against unidentified people on the basis of the postmortem report of the body they had sent to the Indore hospital. It was only on April 18, after the media highlighted the plight of the family looking for its missing son, that the police swung into action and took the family to the MY Hospital for identifying the body.
