MP: Blow to Cong as another MLA joins BJP ahead of bypolls

Sachin Birla, the MLA from Barwaha, which is part of the Khandwa Lok Sabha constituency, joined the BJP at an event in Bediya in the presence of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

AHEAD OF the October 30 bypolls to Khandwa Lok Sabha seat and three Assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh, a Congress MLA joined the BJP on Sunday.

Sachin Birla, the MLA from Barwaha, which is part of the Khandwa Lok Sabha constituency, joined the BJP at an event in Bediya in the presence of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Birla is the 27th Congress MLA to have joined the BJP since March last year, when 22 Congress MLAs had defected to the BJP, leading to the collapse of the 15-month-long Kamal Nath-led Congress government. Four other Congress MLAs joined the BJP later.

Addressing the gathering, Chouhan welcomed Birla into BJP fold and said, “Congress party which is responsible for ruining the country as well as the state is on the way to destruction.” He accused former chief minister Kamal Nath for stopping all public welfare schemes in the 15 months of his rule in the state.

Addressing the rally, Birla, who has a following among Gujjar voters, said, “I was feeling suffocated within the Congress so I switched over to the BJP.”

Hitting back at the BJP, Kamal Nath said, “The BJP… returned to power after buying MLAs as people of MP had voted them out. And sensing the outcome of the upcoming by polls in three assemblies and one Parliamentary seat, the BJP is again poaching MLAs to remain in power.”

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said: “Jo bikau maal hai woh bikega, jo tikau maal hai woh tikega (saleable goods will be sold while durable goods will last).”

The development comes weeks after former Congress MLA Sulochana Rawat joined the BJP along with her son Vishal Rawat.
