The decision comes months after Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said that the tariffs would be hiked due to an increase in the operational expenses of BWSSB.

Individual houses that use up to 8,000 litres of water will see a hike of 0.15 paisa per litre, taking the existing tariff of Rs seven per 1,000 litres to Rs 8.5 per 1,000 litres. After a hike in milk and diesel prices, water will also get dearer in Bengaluru city. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) announced a hike in water tariffs in the city on Wednesday. It said the new tariff will be applicable from the May bill cycle, and the hike depends on the extent of water used by a house or an apartment complex.

The hike in water bills will be annual henceforth, as BWSSB has decided to implement a recommendation of the Administrative Reforms Commission, which has suggested a three per cent increase in water tariffs annually. The decision comes months after Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said that the tariffs would be hiked due to an increase in the operational expenses of BWSSB.

Ram Prasath Manohar, BWSSB Chairman, said that water bills are being hiked after a gap of 11 years, as the power tariff and other expenses of the Board had increased three-fold. “In my opinion, this will not burden consumers who use less water. But it will affect those who use it luxuriously,” he said.

As per the announcement, for a household that used to get a water bill of Rs 200 per month earlier, the bill will go up to Rs 220-230. Individual houses that use up to 8,000 litres of water will see a hike of 0.15 paisa per litre, taking the existing tariff of Rs seven per 1,000 litres to Rs 8.5 per 1,000 litres.

Households using between 8,001 and 25,000 litres of water will have an increased bill of 0.3 paisa per litre, taking the existing tariff from Rs 11 to Rs 14 per 1,000 litres. Those using 25,001-50,000 litres of water will have a 0.8 paisa increase with the tariff increasing from Rs 26 to Rs 34 per 1,000 litres, and households using 50,000 litres and above will see a 1 paisa increase with the tariff going up from Rs 45 to Rs 55 per 1,000 litres.

The revised tariff for apartment complexes is also based on consumption. Apartment complexes using water between 0-2 lakh litre per month will show an increase of 0.3 paisa per litre in their bill; those using 2-5 lakh litres will have to pay 0.6 paisa more, and for complexes using 5-10 lakh litres per month, there will be hike of 1 paisa. Water tariffs will see an increase of 0.9 paisa per litre for bulk use by commercial and industrial users.
