Udupi quadruple murder: Karnataka HC dismisses accused’s plea to transfer case to Bengaluru; trial to proceed
Praveen Chougule, who has been accused of murdering air hostess Aynaz and three members of her family, had filed a plea saying there was a security risk if he was produced before an Udupi court.

The Karnataka High Court last month rejected Udupi quadruple murder accused Praveen Chougule’s petition to transfer the case to a Bengaluru court. Chougule had argued that there was a security risk if he was produced before an Udupi court since it was the jurisdiction of the alleged crime.
In an order passed on August 30, a bench of Justice Mohammad Nawaz rejected this contention, saying Chougule is now lodged in a Bengaluru central prison and “therefore, the apprehension of threat raised by the petitioner is misconceived”.
The high court also said that its previous stay on the proceedings now stood vacated, and the trial could proceed.
Chougule allegedly murdered Air India air hostess Aynaz, who was his colleague, and three members of her family on November 12 last year after their eight-month friendship ended. He allegedly attacked her family members when they tried to stop him.
In his petition, Chougule had stated that he had already been transferred from a jail in Udupi to Bengaluru Central Jail after an application from the inspector of the District Prison and Reformative Centre, on account of a threat to his life.
The court said, “The sessions trial of this nature cannot be stayed. Petitioner can be produced through video conference, which will serve the purpose.”
