Kennels will be established near Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru—the administrative complex of the Karnataka government—to house street dogs found around its premises, so that visitors are not troubled.

The decision to to set up a dog shelter at the Vidhana Soudha complex was made on Tuesday after a meeting chaired by Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader and Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti. The move is essential to control the number of street dogs near the administrative complex, according to Khader.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Khader said that animals have the same right to life as humans, adding that experts would first submit a report on the street dog problem. “The report will have details such as the number of street dogs living around the secretariat, their ages, whether they are immunised and whether the animals are safe. After this, a separate area will be earmarked for the animals,” he said.
