Amidst the tussle between two Congress factions in Karnataka, Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi on Wednesday said that many legislators in the party were seeking a ‘full-fledged president’ for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

During the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting on Monday, Jarkiholi said it was conveyed to the party high command that an announcement about the KPCC president was essential to avoid confusion and unnecessary discussion over the issue. Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, who holds the Bengaluru development and water resources portfolios in the Siddaramaiah Cabinet, has been the KPCC president since July 2020.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference, the minister, identified with the Siddaramaiah camp of the state Congress, said party legislators have “asked the high command to either announce that they would continue with the existing president or appoint a new one”. The demand was to settle the issue of changing the KPCC presidency, he said.

“We need a full-fledged president” is what I have said in the past. The rest is left to Delhi leaders, CM and KPCC president,” Jarkiholi said. He said the demand stemmed from a party resolution that said the state president would be changed post Lok Sabha polls, urging the high command to take a call on the issue.

“The Karnataka Congress unit should be headed by a leader who will bring in votes. We need a popular leader who will help us in the next elections,” he said, adding that any discussion on a change of president was yet to begin.

Jarkiholi, meanwhile, attempted to downplay a reported disagreement between him and Shivakumar during the recent Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting. It was alleged that the two had an exchange of words when Shivakumar praised Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar for her efforts in constructing the district Congress office in Belagavi.

For the office, “my contribution is more, followed by Ramesh Jarkiholi (who is currently BJP MLA) and others. I suggested to the president that there are others who have contributed more,” he said.
