Mysuru Dasara celebrations: Navratri ends with Jamboo Savari; Karnataka CM, DyCM flag off procession at ‘heritage capital’

The nine-day Navratri celebration in the city saw several music concerts, poets' meet, Yuva Dasara, exhibitions, wrestling contests and other events.

Thousands of people thronged Mysuru Tuesday to witness the historic Jamboo Savari of the Mysuru Dasara celebrations.

The traditional procession, which is a part of the ‘Nada Habba’ (state festival), was led by the elephant Abhimanyu and eight other jumbos. Abhimanyu carried the 750-kg golden howdah with the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari. The event is organised by the Karnataka government to replicate the celebrations held under the Mysore Wodeyar dynasty.

dasara Vajra Mushti Kalaga held as part of Dasara at the Mysuru Palace. It’s a form of wrestling different from conventional grappling and entails two jetties taking a swipe at each other’s head with a knuckleduster.

The nine-day Navratri celebration in the city saw several music concerts, poets’ meet, Yuva Dasara, exhibitions, wrestling contests and other events. It culminated with the Jamboo Savari on the tenth day, held during the Vijayadashami festival.

The Jamboo Savari started at the famous Amba Vilas Palace premises in Mysuru — considered the heritage capital of Karnataka where seating arrangements were made for more than 20,000 people.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and other leaders flagged off the procession by offering floral tributes to ‘Nandi Dhwaja’ near the Balarama Gate of the palace.

dasara2 Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the erstwhile royal family scion and his family members participated the Vijayadashami celebrations that were held in Mysuru palace premises.

The procession passed through prominent streets of the city such as K R Circle, Tilak Nagar and Bamboo Bazaar. Tourists had gathered along the procession route in large numbers, cheering as the procession went past. Around 6,000 police personnel were deputed in the city for security arrangements.

Enclosures were set up along the procession route, which were occupied by tourists hours before the Jamboo Savari began. As many as 49 tableaux and 91 cultural troupes participated in the procession.

The torchlight parade, which marks the end of Dasara celebrations, will be held in the evening when Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot will participate.
