Karnataka HC to hold in-camera hearing on Prajwal Revanna’s bail pleas

The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed that the hearing into former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna’s applications for bail and anticipatory bail would be held in camera and not in open court. Revanna has been accused of rape and sexual harassment and has been in prison since May 31 following his arrest.

The order was passed by a bench of Justice M Nagaprasanna after Special Public Prosecutor Ravivarma Kumar, representing the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka Police, urged the same.

“This will be heard in camera, it cannot be heard in open court. We will secure the order and do it (hear in-camera). It should not be that any person is put to ignominy at any cost,” Justice Nagaprasanna said.

Three cases of rape and one of sexual harassment have been filed against Revanna. The Hassan leader has sought anticipatory bail in the case registered against him in Bengaluru and regular bail in the case registered against him at Holenarsipura.

During the hearing, the court was informed that a chargesheet had been filed against Revanna in a special court and a copy was submitted to the high court.

Two chargesheets have been filed against Revanna so far. While one was filed on August 23 for allegedly assaulting his family cook and sexually harassing her daughter, the second was filed on Monday regarding an alleged sexual assault on a domestic help working for the family.

The matter will be heard further on September 12.
