Karnataka BJP MLA suffers minor injuries after bull charges at him at bull-taming contest

The incident happened in Dodderi village, Davangere district when Renukacharya inaugurated the ‘Hori Habba’(bull-taming contest) organised as part of Deepavali festivities.

‘Hori Habba’ is a similar kind of sport like ‘Jallikattu’ practiced in Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s political secretary and BJP MLA from Honnali in Davangere District M P Renukacharya Friday suffered minor injuries after a bull charged at him at a bull-taming contest. The video footage recorded by the villagers shows the bull charging towards the crowd when people lifted Renukacharya on their shoulder as part of welcoming the leader. The BJP MLA escaped with minor injuries but few people in the crowd sustained injuries.

On Saturday, Renukacharya tweeted saying he is fine.

‘Hori Habba’ is similar to ‘Jallikattu’ practiced in Tamil Nadu. The bull taming contest is popular in Shivamogga, Devangere, Haveri and Uttara Kannada districts in North Karnataka during the Deepavali festival.

The rural sport is a gala event in which hundreds of trained and decorated draught cattle and bulls are made to run through the huge crowd. Those who tame the bull or snatch the garland or any other things tied around the bull’s neck get prizes.

Meanwhile, the owners of the bulls, which reach the goal post without being stopped or touched by any contestant, will also get prizes of 40 to 50 grams of gold and bikes etc.
