First series production Tejas aircraft successfully completes first flight

The first series production Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas successfully completed its maiden flight on April 5 from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) airport in Bengaluru.

A spokesperson from HAL said, “As a major milestone in the LCA Tejas Program, the first ever series production standard LCA Trainer (LT 5201) manufactured by HAL took to the skies for its maiden flight from HAL airport and landed after completing a successful sortie of around 35 minutes.”

Officials from Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA), and Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) were present on the occasion.

LCA Tejas trainer is a two-seater aircraft for the Indian Air Force. It is powered by the GE FF404-IN20 turbofan engine, has a length of 13.2 m, width of 8.2 m, and height of 4.4 m. The aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight of 13,500 kg and has a service ceiling (maximum usable altitude of an aircraft) of 50,000 feet.

The Union Cabinet, in 2021, had approved procurement of 73 LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircraft at a cost of Rs 45,696 crore. HAL aims to deliver the aircraft to IAF from next year onwards.
