The Bengaluru police said Monday they have arrested a 24-year-old gym trainer and five of his associates for allegedly robbing two women software engineers by posing as policemen during a birthday party at their house earlier this month.

According to the police, the arrested men have been identified as Mohammed Najash, 24, the prime accused who works as a gym trainer; K T Vinu, 23; M Sarun, 38; Diwakar, 34; Madhu Kumar, 32; and Kiran, 29.

The police said the victim, who belongs to West Bengal and works as a software engineer, met Najash on a dating platform and later at a cafeteria. After their meeting, she invited him to her birthday party at her house on November 6.

The police said Najash attended the birthday party with his friend, Vinu.

A police officer said, “Najash found that the victim was living a lavish lifestyle and decided to rob her. He immediately contacted Sarun, and recruited additional accomplices to execute the scheme that same night.”

Later that evening, a few men knocked on the woman’s door, claiming to be delivery agents from a food ordering app. They barged into the house posing as police officers, and conducted a fake inspection. The accused threatened to book the victims in a drug case.

When the victims pleaded innocence, the fake policemen demanded Rs 5 lakh to drop the charges. The women said they had no money, prompting the accused to seize their mobile phones and order them to arrange the amount by the next day before leaving their house.

The victims talked to their friends, who advised them to approach the police immediately.

The HAL police analysed Najash’s call detail records and examined CCTV footage from the area, which led them to identify and locate all six accused. The probe also revealed that Sarun was involved in a honeytrap case and had previously been arrested in another case.

The police registered a case of robbery, and arrested all the accused, who have been remanded in judicial custody.
