Eateries vandalised during Bengaluru bandh, 3 arrested

Four commercial establishments, including eateries, were allegedly vandalised in Jayanagar Tuesday during the Bengaluru bandh, which otherwise was largely peaceful. The police arrested at least three men and began a search to nab others.
According to the police, these incidents occurred in Jayanagar 4th Block. The Bruhat Bangalore Hotels Association had extended support to the bandh, called to protest the Karnataka government’s move to release 5,000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery river for Tamil Nadu, but restaurants continued to operate.
A group of protesters pelted stones and smashed glass windows of these eateries and supermarkets, demanding they shut shop for the day. As chaos ensued and the miscreants began throwing chairs, panicked customers rushed out of the affected establishments. One woman customer sustained minor injuries during the stone pelting. The vandals destroyed furniture such as chairs and tables, television sets, and even the food prepared for customers. After causing the damage, the protesters swiftly fled the scene on motorcycles. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras.
The eatery owners expressed their disappointment, noting that both the association and the police and administration had advised them to continue business as usual, promising security.
A police officer said, “Four separate cases have been registered. It was alleged that the protesters were followers of BJP MLA Ramamurthy, but later they said that they were not supporters of the MLA.” Ramamurthy later told the media that the vandals were not his followers.
Police Commissioner B Dayananda said the police detained 771 people during the bandh and later let them out.
