Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D K Shivakumar teared up while speaking on a condolence motion during the first day of the state legislature session which started Monday.
Among the list of people in the obituary reference was former MP and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president R Dhruvanarayana, 62, who died following a cardiac arrest in March this year ahead of the state Assembly elections. At the time, Dhruvanarayana was considered a frontrunner to win from the Nanjangud constituency in Mysuru district.
The Congress then fielded their son, Darshan Dhruvanarayana, 28, as the candidate from Nanjangud constituency and he won by a margin of 47,000 votes. He is the youngest member of the 16th Karnataka Legislative Assembly which came to power in May.
Dhruvanarayana was of gentle nature and always had a smiling face, Shivakumar said, recalling that he never talked about caste. “We talk about caste all the time. Being from an SC community, he never talked about caste and took everyone together. We have lost a great friend and brother. Offering condolences during the motion is painful,” he said.
“Dhruvanarayana was with me as a student leader. Later, he joined the BJP once. I brought him back to the Congress,” the deputy CM recalled, noting that the KPCC working chief’s first Assembly election win in 2004 was by a single vote.
