Cong candidates list ready for high command nod

Congress sources said the party had decided to give tickets to at least four candidates from minority communities.

The Congress screening committee has almost decided 10 candidates — nine sitting MPs and Nandan Nilekani, chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India — for the Lok Sabha elections. The list has been sent to the party high command for approval.

The candidates for the Bangalore North and Dakshina Kannada (Mangalore) seats will be picked through an internal election and the high command will decide who will contest from the remaining 16 constituencies. The final list will be declared after an AICC election committee meeting in Delhi on February 17 Thursday, a screening committee meeting headed by Vayalar Ravi and attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Digvijaya Singh, KPCC president G Parameshwara and others short-listed aspirants for the 16 constituencies. There was, however, only one name proposed for Bellary, from where former MP N Y Hanumanthappa will likely contest. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had won the seat in 1999.
