Bengaluru Hudugaru – a group of environmental enthusiasts – has launched the ‘Cool Tree  campaign’ in a bid to protect trees in the IT capital of the country.

The group said that increasing heat and depleting groundwater have affected several trees, leading to termite infestations and stunted growth.

A team of around 20-30 people carry out a drive every Sunday to cover these trees with a white coating made from a mixture of protective chemicals.

The concoction includes Befenthrin, Malathion or Organophosphate, neem oil, white powder, and wheat flour for adhesion. The group has formulated the solution based on the suggestions of a BBMP forest range officer.

Vinod Kartavya, founder of Bengaluru Hudugaru, said, “The excessive heat does not allow the water to reach the branches as it evaporates from the stem. Termite infestation makes it worse by feeding on the available moisture in the tree. This catalyses the rotting process and results in the early decay of the trees, reducing the lifespan of a tree by at least 30-35 years.

“However, the removal of termites and applying the white coat can protect the trees, improve their health, and significantly increase their longevity.

“Just like humans need sunscreen to protect their skin from external damage from the sunrays, the trees need it too.”

The initiative has been going on for the last four weeks and more than 200 trees have already been coated with the white mixture after the removal of termites.

The campaign has already covered residential areas in Yelahanka, Indiranagar, Nagarabhavi, and Shanthala Nagar. The group has decided to take the initiative to more areas.
