The stance by CM Siddaramaiah came even as BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) leaders mounted pressure on the government to declare a holiday to mark the consecration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Over the last two days, BJP leaders have branded Chief Minister Siddaramaiah as ‘anti-Hindu’ for not declaring leave on January 22. Congress leaders including Deputy CM D K Shivakumar have defended the government, saying that “we don’t need to learn from others about religion and devotion.”

Karnataka Deputy CM D K Shivakumar defends govt stand of 'no holiday' on Jan 22

We don't need lectures from others about religion and devotion, says Deputy CM D K Shivakumar replying to a question on the BJP leaders' call to declare a holiday on Monday for the consecration of the Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Hitting out at the BJP for politicising the temple issue, Shivakumar said, "We don't use religion for publicity. We believe that prayers yield results and hence we have ordered special pooja at all the temples under the Muzrai department even before anyone asked for it."

He also said the Congress does not need lectures from others on this issue. "There is Rama in Siddaramaiah's name and Shiva in my name. We know our rituals and traditions. There should be dharma in politics but not politics in dharma," Shivakumar said.

Siddaramaiah hits back at BJP over 'untoward incident' remark on Ram Mandir inauguration day

Slamming BJP Karnataka president B Y Vijayendra's remark that the Congress government in the state will be responsible for untoward incidents, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Saturday said it contains "threat and provocation".

📍Siddaramaiah said it has come to his attention that some miscreants are spreading false news and provoking innocent people.

📍 Upon hearing such news, one should not panic or get agitated but should immediately inform the nearest police station. Under no circumstances should anyone take the law into their own hands, Siddaramaiah urged public

📍 "BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra has stated that if any unfortunate incident occurs in the state, the Congress government will be held responsible. His statement seems to contain more of a threat and provocation than an intention to maintain peace," the chief minister was quoted as saying by PTI.

📍 The government directed police department to be on alert. "In the backdrop of the Ram temple event, I have instructed the police to take preventive measures to ensure that no untoward incidents occur in the state and to maintain peace and order," Siddaramaiah said in a statement.

📍 Siddaramaiah emphasised that the government was aware of its duties. If something goes wrong, the law will take its course, he added.

📍"The state government has noticed that some BJP legislators and MPs are already making provocative statements. If BJP state president takes strict action against such individuals, it would ease the government's task of maintaining law and order," the Chief Minister said. Further, Siddaramaiah said, "God, religion, worship, and devotion are all personal matters."

📍Adding, the Congress leader said, "if these are kept personal, it will bring respect to God and religion, and welfare to the society. This applies to all followers of all religions."

Even though Vijayendra put forth the demand to declare government holiday on January 22, the Congress government clarified it will be a working day for schools, even as private school managements plan to live-stream the ceremony for students.
