Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider passing the Women's Reservation Bill, before the 2024 general (Lok Sabha) elections.
Pointing out that the government led by Modi enjoys a majority in Parliament and may be successful in passing it, the JD(S) patriarch in his letter to the Prime Minister said, to accord one third reservation to women in legislative assemblies and parliament is an idea whose time has come.
"When the Election Commission announced polls in Karnataka recently, and released the number of eligible women voters in the State, it was not a surprise that they were nearly fifty per cent of the total electorate. The statistics are not different in other states of India. This made me revisit the idea of reservations for women in legislative assemblies and parliament," Gowda said. (PTI)

With the BJP announcing candidates for 212 of the 224 Assembly seats in Karnataka, the pattern of distribution of tickets by the ruling party shows that it is attempting to mollify several communities that it is nervous about following the modification of quotas undertaken by the Basavaraj Bommai-led government in recent months.
In the case of the Scheduled Caste (SC) communities, the BJP has so far announced 34 candidates — out of a maximum of 36 SC-reserved seats — with 16 tickets going to “touchable” sub-groups such as Lambanis and Bhovis. This is seen as an attempt to assuage the anger of the community that is reportedly unhappy with the state government’s recent move to break up the total reservations of 17% in jobs and education available to SCs and provide the “touchable” groups with a 4.5% share. Over the course of the latest hearings dated April 10 and 12, Twitter has put forth its arguments before the Karnataka High Court in the account blocking case, including the rights of foreign entities, comparative points of US law as well as the reasoning behind blocking of accounts. The matter was heard before a single judge bench consisting of Justice Krishna Dixit.

Twitter had also argued that the reason for blocking the accounts was not supplied to them, as per Section 69a of the IT Act. They also argued that as per the Constitution in case of a breach they could still approach the court as the Constitution does not guarantee only the fundamental rights. (Read more)
