(Express Photo)A second-year MBA student at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) was found dead on the premises of the campus hostel on Bannerghatta Road Sunday. The police suspect it is a case of suicide but have not ruled out other possibilities.
The deceased has been identified as Gujarat native Nilay Kailashbhai Patel, 28, who lived in the IIM-B hostel. Mico Layout police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation.
According to the police, a security guard found the student’s body at around 6.45 am. Preliminary probe has established that Patel had gone to celebrate his birthday in a friend’s room in a different block of the hostel on Saturday. He reportedly returned to his room in ‘F’ block at around 11.30 pm.
An officer said, “He may have died by suicide or fallen accidentally. There could be more. We have collected the CCTV footage and are waiting for the post-mortem report.”
In a statement, IIM-B said, “It is with profound sadness that IIM Bangalore shares the news of the untimely passing of our PGP 2023-25 student, Nilay Kailashbhai Patel. A bright student, and a much-loved friend to many, Nilay will be sorely missed by the entire IIM-B family. In this difficult time, we request consideration, respect, and privacy for him and his family.”
Following the incident, the All-India OBC Students’ Association has demanded that the institution provide clarity on Patel’s death. The association said the institution lacked sufficient mechanisms to address the concerns of marginalised communities, a matter they have raised consistently.
