Diwali bet turns tragic: Bengaluru daily wager loses life after box filled with firecrackers explodes

The Konanakunte police have registered a case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

A daily wager who got injured after sitting on a box containing lit firecrackers as part of a Diwali bet on Thursday lost his life during treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Shabari M, 32, was a resident of Konanakunte in Bengaluru. The incident took place when Shabari along with six of his friends was burning firecrackers on the night of October 31. All seven friends were allegedly drunk.

At one point, Shabari was asked to sit on a box filled with lit firecrackers. A police officer said one of his friends told Shabari that they would give him an auto-rickshaw if he accepted the challenge. But if he failed, then he would have to leave the city.

CCTV footage shared by police sources shows Shabari sitting on the box of firecrackers and his friends running to a safe distance. Moments later, the box explodes, leaving Shabari grievously injured.

The Konanakunte police have registered a case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and arrested all six friends of Shabari – Naveen Kumar, Dinakaran, Sathyavelu, Karthik, Satish and Santosh Kumar.
