Wind of change blows across science colleges in Gujarat University

Students with over 70% marks also applying for BSc courses in GU

The trend in science colleges affiliated to the Gujarat University seems to be changing this year as students with high scores are also coming forward for admission in pure sciences subjects under BSc.

The situation is reported to be more encouraging in subjects like zoology and botany as students with over 70 per cent marks in Class XII Board examinations have also applied for them.

GU sources said that over 30,000 admission forms have been sold in all the 27 colleges affiliated with the university in the last three days and about 20,000 filled applications have been received so far.

The oldest and most prestigious M G Science Institute has alone sold more than 4,500 forms since the sale of admissions forms began on May 17. By Thursday evening,it received a little above 3,000 application forms from the students for a total of 500 seats. The last date for submitting forms is May 20.

The total number of seats in Group A with mathematics and Group B with zoology and botany is reported to be little over 5,000 in GU-affiliated colleges.

M G Science Institute principal P K Jain told The Indian Express that this year science colleges were getting good response from students. He said there were many students from both A and B groups with over 70 per cent marks who personally told him that they wanted to make their career in pure science rather than engineering and medical courses.

“This is very encouraging scenario as last year science colleges were facing shortage of students as most of them opted for professional courses,” said Jain, adding that it would improve the quality of science education in the state.
