Western Railway collects Rs 21.89 crore fine from ticketless passengers in April — second highest in 5 years
The authorities carried out continuous intensive ticket-checking drives in Mumbai suburban local services, mail/express trains, as well as passenger trains and holiday specials in a crackdown.

The Western Railway authorities collected a total penalty of Rs 21.89 crore from ticketless passengers in April 2025, the second highest collection in the last five years.
Railway sources said that the area under the Western Railway jurisdiction includes half of Churchgate, Virar and other stations in Mumbai; Boisar, Palghar, Dahanu in Maharashtra; entire adjoining state of Gujarat, starting from Umbergaon; Chittorgarh in Rajasthan; and Indore in Madhya Pradesh.
In order to ensure hassle-free, comfortable travel and better services to all passengers travelling in different trains of Western Railway, the authorities carried out continuous intensive ticket-checking drives in Mumbai suburban local services, mail/express trains, as well as passenger trains and holiday specials in a crackdown bid on ticketless or irregular passengers in April.
The ticket-checking team under the supervision of senior commercial officers of the Western Railway had during the month-long drive collected a total penalty of Rs 21.89 crore, which includes Rs 6 crore from Mumbai suburban section (local trains), says sources in the railway division.
As press release issued by Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway, Vineet Abhishek, stated: “An amount of Rs. 21.89 crore was recovered through detection from 3.10 lakh ticketless/irregular passengers, including unbooked luggage cases in April month, including Rs. 6 crores fine amount collected from 1 lakh passengers from Mumbai Suburban section. To prevent unauthorised entry in AC local trains, frequent surprise ticket checking drives are also being carried out. As a result of these drives, more than 6,000 unauthorised passengers have been penalised in April 2025 and Rs. 20.24 lakhs collected in fines.”
