A day after the twin buildings collapsed, constructed by the Vadodara Urban Development Authority (VUDA) in the Madhavnagar society in Atladara, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is still deliberating a rehabilitation plan for the families rendered homeless after the crash.
The VMC has so far not prepared a list of families who have to be rehabilitated, although almost every single of the 33 buildings standing in the colony meant for the economically backward classes,is dangerous.
The VMC on Wednesday had shifted about 25 families from the colony to municipal schools. However, the corporation is still facing with the big question of a permanent rehabilitation for the families. Standing Committee chairman Dr Hitendra Patel said,We are discussing the possibilities of providing them with an alternate residence. Right now,we have given them shelter in municipal schools in the city. VMC Municipal Commissioner Manish Bharadwaj said that the corporation was considering shifting of families to vacant flats under the JNNURM scheme in the city. However, the details of the same were not finalised.
VUDA officials have, however, washed their hands off the responsibility. A senior engineer of the department said,A committee has been formed by the corporation to relocate the families one by one. A resolution will be passed soon.
The Vadodara city Congress, meanwhile, met District Collector Vinod Rao and submitted a memorandum demanding a higher compensation for the victims. City Congress president Narendra Rawat said,Yesterday Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh as compensation for the families of those who died in the mishap. This was a calamity created by the administration. The compensation should be at least Rs 10 lakh. Apart from this, the Urban Development minister Anandiben Patel must resign on moral grounds. The Congress has also demanded that the families be given a proper permanent residence.
