Her work is bold, brazen, flamboyantly outrageous and unapologetically kitschy but with her new collection at Ensemble,Malini Ramani is not only zigzagging the couture circuit, she is leaving her manicured finger prints on unconquered territory in fashion. The colours are sombre, the embroidery is minimal and there is hardly any use of sequins. So has the gal mellowed with age? Hah.

There is no repressing her zest as she weaves between the racks, adjusting the outfits—a tuck here,a stitch there—donned by her models. It sure is a task to sit her down for a chat so isn’t it only natural that such joie de vivre brims over into her creations? While the colours might be a tad grave, the pluck is still there in the daring patterns, the tribal prints, the satin and silk dresses, the crocheted tops with the reduced surface area and the sheer, flowing kaftans.

The feisty fashionista who looks ravishing in a red, flowing chiffon dress with a plunging neckline says that she gets her ideas in “crazy flashes” that make her follow “totally psycho” urges.

Her latest collection has done a volte-face from the past because she wanted to grow as a designer. “This, for example,” she elaborates plucking an aubergine dress from a table littered with her creations,“is a colour that I’ve never tried before. It is a great winter colour that suits Indian skin tones.”

So why is her collection called ‘It’s a Playdate for Bombabes’? “I have a lot of playful clothes that you can virtually wear for any occasion. It cannot strictly be classified into party or day wear.” She points out a tribal-print dress that a friend is wearing. “See that dress, for example. She’s going to wear that to pick up her kid from school. Later, she’ll cook for her husband in that.”

Bombabes? “I just thought it was a fun word.” Why? “Why do you think so,” she asks poker-faced,quirkily raising a pokey eyebrow. And then we dare to venture into personal terrain. Paramour of the moment? The reply is clipped. “Whoa. That’s personal. All I can say is that I’m between lovers at present.”

The wheaty beauty says that her beauty regimen is minimal but effective. “Sadly,” she says, deadpan. “I suffer from the Peter Pan syndrome. That means I never want to grow up. I still feel as if I’m 18. That’s why I look young.”

Three style tips she’d like to dole out for the chic cavalcade of the city? “Don’t try too hard to look good. Everything hinges on shoes. Scruffy shoes have caused the downfall of many a woman. And wear as much of Malini Ramani as possible.”
