Vaghela gets EC stick for violation of model code

The Election Commission of India (EC) slapped a notice on Union Minister and Lok Sabha candidate from Panchmahals,Shankersinh Vaghela,for distributing crockery with his name printed on it.

The Election Commission of India (EC) slapped a notice on Union Minister and Lok Sabha candidate from Panchmahals,Shankersinh Vaghela,for distributing crockery with his name printed on it.

The decision came after the Godhra BJP unit had complained to the EC on Monday that Vaghela had handed out cups bearing his name,to tribal families during an election campaign,clearly violating the Model Code of Conduct.

Nodal Officer G N Thakkar said that after the investigations were completed,it was found that porcelain cups bearing Vaghela’s pictures were distributed in Kalol and Shehra in the Panchmahals constituency.

“We sent the notice to Vaghela on Thursday,” said Thakkar.

Godhra District Collector Milind Torwane said that FIRs for the distribution of the crockery has been lodged against two unknown Congress workers from Shehra and Kalol.

Meanwhile,the EC is yet to spell out the results of the investigation on BJP candidate from Panchmahals,Prabhatsinh Chauhan,for not providing information about his second wife in the affidavit submitted to the district collectorate.

“The matter has been referred to the police and the district magistrate,as misinformation in a court affidavit is a violation of the CrPC and the Indian Penal Code,” said Torwane.

He also said that complaints against Chauhan were raised by some of his family members,who had said that Chauhan did not furnish all the information.

Elsewhere,the Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Dahod,Dr Prabha Taviad is in trouble for allegedly distributing currency notes in Dahod town. A private

TV channel aired images of her distributing the notes to the villagers during an election campaign.

Dahod Collector R M Jadhav has now instituted an inquiry into the matter.

“We have asked for the CD from the channel. An inquiry into the matter has started. After examining the contents of the images,we will be able to tell whether Taviad was really distributing the notes,” added Jadhav.
