In a boost for Vadodara’s Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), an Inter-University Centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the Ministry of Education, has approved a proposal for a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) titled ‘Literature and Cinema’, developed by Professor and Head of Department of English, and Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts, Hitesh Raviya.

The five-credit course Literature and Cinema will be offered under the B.A. (Honours) English in the Sixth Semester, in alignment with the UGC Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) and SWAYAM Guidelines 2024. It explores the vibrant relationship between literature and film, examining how stories and aesthetics evolve across written and visual mediums.

The course proposal was submitted through the Education Multimedia Research Centre, Ahmedabad. It is the only undergraduate-level English Literature course from across Gujarat to be approved under the Centre’s SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) initiative by the Ministry of Education.

Raviya said, “The team will work collaboratively under the SWAYAM initiative to design, script and produce the course for national learners. The course has been approved after evaluation by the Subject Expert Group and the Academic Advisory Council of CEC. The course will be produced at the CEC Media Centre, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, and is scheduled for completion by February 25, 2026.”

“The course will integrate adaptation theory, film analysis and cultural perspectives through selected works such as Romeo and Juliet, Pinjar, Earth, Haider and From Russia with Love. It will also feature discussions on key film theorists including James Monaco, Linda Hutcheon, and Laura Mulvey,” said Raviya, who has three decades of experience in teaching, research and academic leadership.

Raviya has also contributed to academic and policy initiatives with UGC, NAAC, RIE, NCERT and the Ministry of Culture, strengthening the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems and digital pedagogy in higher education. The course will soon be made available nationwide on the SWAYAM platform with certification by MSU Baroda and CEC, New Delhi, contributing to India’s growing ecosystem of digital higher education in the humanities.
