Amid Christmas cheers, it was a close shave for three children under five years of age on Wednesday at a fair in Vadodara as they were thrown off from the cabins of an amusement ride when the gates opened midair.
Hours later, the Vadodara city police suspended operations at Royal Mela, the fair set up along Vishwamitri Road in the city by a private organiser, for the evening. Police said that a process had been initiated to lodge an FIR against the organisers as the ride was not in the list of rides for which permission was granted by the district committee to regulate amusement parks and gaming zones.
The incident took place at around 8 pm on Wednesday. According to the police, the control room received a complaint that at least three children had been thrown off from the cabins made of fiber reinforced plastic when the gates opened midair. Joint Commissioner of Police, Dr Leena Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 2, Abhay Soni and teams of the Raopura police station arrived at the spot and asked the organisers to suspend the operations for the evening, inquiring into the permissions sought by the organiser.
“The ride has been stopped and fortunately, there are no injuries as the children were rescued. A license has been granted to the organisers for the fair by the police commissioner but we checked the documents and have found that this particular ride was not included in the list for permissions. We are proceeding with an FIR against the organisers,” Patil told The Indian Express. While parents of the children who were seated in the ride alleged that the operator of the ride had “run away” after setting the ride at “top speed”, police said that a probe had been initiated to ascertain the reason for the ‘accident’. Patil added that the permission for the fair had been granted by the police following a clearance from the City Ride Safety and Inspection Committees formed to implement The Gujarat Amusement Rides and Gaming Zone Activity Safety Rules.
The model rules were published by the state home department earlier in June. Patil said, “The Committee will now come to inspect the fair on Thursday. Until the probe is on, the rides will continue to remain suspended.”
