Dont get surprised if a Traffic police knocks at your door and hands over a challan with smiling face as city police have started using CCTV cameras to catch those who flout traffic rules.
The exercise according to officials involved in the drive is tedious but more effective than the on-the-spot fine system. Top officials at the Traffic department told The Indian Express that the drive has been initiated for last couple of months and many offenders have been fined using the CCTV footage.
As per the new system, the Traffic police are given the CCTV grabs of the offenders along with their vehicle numbers. The police then get the information about the offenders with the help of the Regional Transportation Office. The owner is then traced and handed over the challan and the fine is collected.
Most of them (the offenders) get surprised when they see their photograph along with the vehicle and also the reason why he or she has been fined. The initial reaction is that the police have reached a wrong address but when we show them the photograph they admit their mistake and pay the fine, said Assistant police Commissioner B Division M J Pancholi who is looking after the Traffic department.
Many say that now onwards they will not flout the traffic rules for the fear of CCTV cameras, said Pancholi.
While the new system is expected to imbibe traffic discipline among the commuters,it has certainly added work for the police. It is not always easy to trace vehicle owners. Many a time vehicles are sold to others and we have to trace the latest owner. Though handing over challans to offenders is an additional work,it has certainly made the commuters more responsible towards traffic rules, he said.
Pancholi further said,The impact of such drives would be seen in the days to come. So,far people used to flout the rules in absence of the traffic police. Now,they will have to follow the rules even if we are not there because of the CCTV cameras.
