The rainfall and change of weather caused by the depression in the Arabian sea has impacted the Kharif crops of groundnut, moong, soybean and urad, all of whose sale was to begin Saturday under the Minimum Support Price (MSP), but the government cancelled the procurement on account of the damage.
A government statement issued on Saturday said this kind of a situation where the state has faced unseasonal rains during the harvest season of Kharif crops, has not arisen in the past two decades and the state government is “determined” to help the farmers who could face immense damage to standing crops.
According to a government estimate, at least 10 lakh hectares of farmland has been impacted by the change in weather. On October 29 the government had set a seven-day deadline for submitting the survey reports on the crop damage. On Saturday following a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani, Chief Secretary M K Das and other bureaucrats, the CM emphasised that the ground survey be completed in three days and a report submitted to the state government.
