Two women from Sikkim died after fire broke out at a spa situated at Fortune complex in Surat on Wednesday evening, officials said. The women, aged between 24 and 30, died of asphyxiation after inhaling the smoke, police said, adding their bodies were found in the bathroom of the spa, situated in the third floor of the building. According to details received from the Surat fire department, the blaze broke out in Amrutya Spa and Salon Centre at the complex situated at City Light Road.

Fire personnel from Majura, Vesu and Katodara reached the spot and faced much difficulty in reaching the spa since the entire second and third floors of the building were engulfed in smoke, said officials. Vesu police staff cordoned the complex area and stopped the traffic even as shop owners shut down their establishments and ran to safety.

Three other workers of the spa escaped after the fire broke out and informed authorities about the two women left behind on the premises. The officials somehow managed to reach the spa and douse the flames; they found the bodies of the two women in the bathroom. Their faces were burnt, said Vesu fire station fire officer Ishwar Patel. Later in the evening, Mayor Daxesh Mavani reached the spot and assured that strict legal action will be taken.

Mavani said, “The fire has been brought under control. The bodies of the women have been sent to New Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. We have ordered a detailed investigation into the incident. We will take strict legal actions against the owners. We will also check whether the fire no-objection certificate (NOC) of the complex or the shop was renewed or not.”

Fire officer Patel said, “The firm is owned by one Dilshad Khan. The spa and salon is situated in a 20 square feet area. There was only a single entry and exit point and all the windows were locked, making it a concealed room. The fire broke out in the front room and due to the presence of cosmetic items, it spread rapidly.”

According to survivors, five women were present at the spa when the fire broke out. “Three escaped and raised an alarm while the other two, who locked themselves in the bathroom as smoke engulfed the entire room, could not find their way out,” said Patel.
