Express photoThree labourers were killed Wednesday after a crane reportedly collapsed on them at the site of an under-construction jetty in Devbhumi Dwarka district’s Okha area, said police. A case of accidental death has been registered in connection with the matter by the police.
Meanwhile, authorities of Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), which is constructing the jetty, said that they are issuing a notice to the contractor over the incident and action will be taken further according to the law. They also added that compensation will be given to the families of the deceased. According to the police, the incident happened around 11.30am. Police Sub-Inspector R R Jaru from Okha Marine Police Station, who is also the investigating officer of the case, said, “According to the initial probe, the accident happened after a cable of the crane snapped and collapsed on the labourers. Two of them died on the spot and the third one died during treatment. But we are awaiting the Forensic Science Laboratory report on the cause of the accident. For now, we have registered a case of accidental death and further investigations are on.”
Jaru said that one of the three labourers is from South Gujarat and the other two are from Uttar Pradesh. He added that the jetty is being constructed by GMB for Indian Coast Guard. Reacting to the development, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GMB, Rajkumar Beniwal, said, “We are issuing a notice to the contractor and action will be taken as per the applicable law. We are also providing compensation to the family of the deceased.”
