An incident of ragging of first year B Tech students of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) by their seniors has come to light. The college authorities have expelled 24 students from the hostel in this regard. But officials of the Anti-Ragging committee are yet to produce their report to the authorities.
According to the details,around 15 students including four girls were taken to the Sarojini Naidu garden at Icchanath on Saturday and made to squat,hold their ears and sing songs,among others.
Several senior citizens who were on evening walk in the garden,were witness to the incident,and complained about the matter to the hostel warden.
SVNIT officials rushed to the spot at Umra and managed to catch hold of a few senior students. The others successfully escaped by jumping over the barricade.
On questioning,the juniors denied of any ragging incident and said they had come here for a party.
Institute level Anti-Ragging Committee of SVNIT had on Sunday noted down the statements of 24 senior students who were identified to have remained present in the garden.
The committee members comprising Dean Student Welfare,Professor Incharge Students,Chief Hostel Warden,Dean Research and Consultancy,Dean Academic,Professor incharge security arrangements,will now make a report of the ragging and will put forward it to the registrar and his deputy. Sources said SVNIT authorities have sent letters to three senior girl students who had taken part in the ragging.
SVNIT Registrar H A Parmar said: We have suspended 24 students from the hostel and are awaiting the report from the Anti-Ragging committee. Later,we will decide whether action should be taken or not. At present,it is difficult to say whether the senior students had indulged in ragging or not. If they are found guilty,we will take strict action against them according to the norms prescribed by the Supreme Court.
