Four persons, including two minors, died in Surat in two separate incidents on Thursday, police said. While a teacher allegedly killed his two minor children before dying by suicide at their residence, in a separate incident, a woman allegedly attempted to kill her minor child by poisoning him and later consumed poison, according to the police.

As per Umra police officers, the first incident took place in Athwalines. Alpesh Solanki (41), who lived in the officers’ quarters of the district panchayat and worked as a teacher in a private school, is said to have poisoned his two children Krishiv (8), and Karnish (2) and then died by suicide at his residence on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Alpesh’s wife Falguni, who is a clerk at the Surat district panchayat office, said that on Thursday, her husband was not answering her calls. She rushed home from the office during the lunch hours and found the door locked from inside. She broke down the door with help from some neighbours after receiving no response and found the bodies of her children and husband. A bottle of soft drink was also found nearby.

The neighbours informed the police, after which officers from the Umra police department reached the spot. The bodies were sent to the New Civil Hospital for autopsy and a police complaint was lodged against Alpesh for the murder of his daughter and son.

Umra police inspector J A Rathwa said: “Alpesh hailed from Sabarkantha district, while Falguni is from Tapi. They settled in Surat after marriage when Falguni got a job in the Surat District Panchayat office. We have started a probe. Alpesh’s motive is yet to be ascertained. We have recovered an empty packet of rat poison in the kitchen. Alpesh might have mixed the poison in the soft drink and fed the children.”

In the second incident, the deceased has been identified as Nayna Dharmesh Khandela (34), who hailed from Amreli district and lived at her parents’ house in Surat’s Laskana. She had stepped out of the house on Thursday morning to buy some medicine for her seven-year-old son Hiyansh, who was ill. However, as she neither returned, nor answered calls made by her father, the family started looking for her. The mother-son duo were later found in a semi-conscious state on the roadside near a Mahadev temple in Surat’s Pasodara. They were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared Nayna dead after primary treatment. Her son’s condition is reported to be stable.

Laskana Police Inspector K A Chavda said: “We are trying to find out why she took such a drastic step. She had gotten married twice. She had a son (Hiyansh) from the first marriage. Her first husband died in 2020. She got married again, but the marriage did not last. She then started staying with her parents in Surat. She used to do patchwork on sarees at home to earn money. We are scanning her mobile phones for more details in the case.”
