Surat: Poll officials seize Rs 29 lakh

A vigilance team of Surat district election officials seized Rs 29.9 lakh in cash from a car here on Wednesday. Officials said the car owner,Parasmal Jain,claimed that he was a jeweller based in Bardoli taluka and was going to Surat city to purchase some jewellery items.

Acting on a tip-off,the team of election officials stopped the car on the Udhna Magdalla road near Navjivan Circle and found Jain carrying the amount. On learning about the incident,income tax officials reached the spot and took Jain to the I-T office for questioning. District Collector Jayprakash Shivhare said,“The car owner is a jeweller. The Income Tax department has started investigations. Our officials have also taken statements of Jain.”
