Surat city awarded as ‘National Clean Air City’

(Express Photo)After Surat city topped the list of the cleanest cities in the country last year, it has now bagged the top spot in the Swachh Vayu Survekshan 2024 conducted by the Union Environment Ministry. On Saturday, it was awarded as the ‘National Clean Air City’ in the country by Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav in Jaipur.
The award, which comes with a cheaque of Rs 1.5 crore, was conferred to Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agrawal and Mayor Daxesh Mawani. In Swachh Vayu Survekshan 2023, Surat was in 13th position, with Indore at the top.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, on his official X handle, said, “Congratulations. Clean air is most important component of Ease of Living in urban development envisaged by PM Shri Narendra Modi. The awareness and part of SMC and the people of Surat is laudable. Surat’s top position in Swachh Vayu Survekshan will be inspiration for other cities to strive in this direction.”
The Swachh Vayu Survekshan surveys “category 1” cities that have a population of more than 10 lakh. This year, Surat secured 194 out of 200 points for the top position, followed by Jabalpur and Agra. Similarly, among category 2 cities (population between 3 to 10 lakh), Ferozabad topped the list, followed by Amravati and Jhansi. In Category 3 cities (population below 3 lakh), the top three positions went to Rae Bareli, Nalgonda, and Nalagarh.
