A 24-hour operation conducted by the Surat Fire Department and the NDRF to rescue a two-year-old boy, who accidentally fell into an open manhole in Surat’s Variyav on Wednesday, ended with a tragedy as the child was found dead on Thursday afternoon.

As per fire officials, Vaishali Vegas, accompanied by her son Kedar, residents of Suman Sadhna Awas on Variyav Amreli road, had gone to a ‘Budhwar Market’ at Varyav on Wednesday afternoon. Vaishali was also accompanied by other women from her neighbourhood.

While the mother and the other women were busy shopping, Kedar accidentally fell into an open manhole. One of the women, who saw the child falling, alerted Vaishali. People gathered at the spot and tried to rescue him, but in vain. Locals, meanwhile, informed the Fire Department about the incident.

The Katargam firefighting team reached the spot and started a rescue operation. Other teams joined them later.

Chief Fire Officer, Surat, Basant Pareek, and other officials also reached the spot. NDRF officials reached Surat on Thursday and joined the rescue operation. They recovered the child’s body around 5.30 pm on Thursday around 1.5 km away from Variyav Sewage Pumping Station. The body was taken to SMIMER hospital, and will be handed over to the family on Friday after a post-mortem.

“We made all possible efforts for 24 hours. The manhole was connected with several drainage lines, which were connected with several cattle sheds in the area. The minor might have asphyxiated to death due to some poisonous gas. The area was newly added to the Surat Municipal Corporation limit. Several manholes in the area are age-old. We will work with the SMC on a well-organised drainage line,” Pareek told The Indian Express.
