State sets up panel to probe snooping row

The meeting observed that the surveillance of a 32-year-old woman was a very serious issue pertaining to violation of individual’s privacy.

Under attack for alleged surveillance of a woman architect, the Narendra Modi government on Monday appointed “a two-member inquiry commision… to investigate all aspects of the tapes controversy”.

The commission, comprising retired High Court Judge Sugna Bhatt and former Additional Chief Secretary K C Kapoor, will submit a report in three months, said Gujarat government spokesperson Nitin Patel.

Bhatt, who gave a clean chit to the Gujarat government as head of a state government-appointed commission to probe the 2006 Surat floods,is chairman of the state OBC commission at present. Kapoor last served as State Election Commissioner.

On Saturday, suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma had moved the Supreme Court seeking a CBI inquiry into the snooping controversy. Sharma claimed maintained that his “knowledge of the intimacy” between Modi and the woman had led the government to file false corruption cases against him.

State Cong demands inquiry by SC judge

The state Congress held a meeting on Tuesday to pass a resolution demanding a probe into the “snooping row”,allegedly involving Chief Minister Narendra Modi and former minister Amit Shah,by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court.

The committee also decided to launch a state-wide demonstration and the dates for the programme would be announced on November 30.

The meeting observed that the surveillance of a 32-year-old woman and those going to meet her was a very serious issue pertaining to violation of individual’s privacy and it was the responsibility of the Congress workers to make the public aware of it.
